Complete technical guide for façade contractors, glass professionals and construction companies

Glass balustrades have become an architectural standard in residential buildings, public establishments (ERP), offices and hospitality. Their transparency and minimalist appearance are highly attractive, but they require rigorous technical control to avoid risks of falls, breakage or regulatory non-compliance.

In this article, we cover:

  • Applicable DTU rules and standards in France
  • Minimum dimensions
  • Recommended glass thicknesses depending on use
  • Load calculation formulas
  • Safety margins
  • Legal risks
  • And how Noxem Group supports you with custom sizing

1. Applicable standards and DTU for glass balustrades

In France, balustrades are governed by a set of technical and legal texts:

Main standards & regulations

  • NF P01-012: Balustrade dimensions
  • NF P01-013: Testing methods
  • DTU 39 / DTU 39 P5: Exterior glazing
  • Eurocodes (EN 1991 & EN 1993): Loads and forces
  • EN 14449: Laminated safety glass

Key requirements

  • Resistance to horizontal load: 0.6 to 1 kN/m (residential → public areas)
  • Mandatory use of laminated glass (PVB or SentryGlas), even if tempered
  • Minimum height: 1.00 m (residential), 1.10 m (public buildings)
  • No sharp edges → polished edges required

2. Mandatory minimum dimensions (NF P01-012)

Minimum height

  • Residential:
00 m between finished floor and top of balustrade
  • Public buildings, offices, public areas:
    Minimum 1.10 m

Lower safety zone

  • 45 cm solid zone (solid panel or laminated glass)

Rails and horizontal elements

  • No climbable effect: no horizontal elements between 0 and 1 m

Maximum gaps

  • 18 cm max between floor and panel (offset fixing)
  • 11 cm max to prevent a child from passing through

3. Recommended glass thicknesses (depending on use)

Use

Installation type

Recommended thickness

Individual house

Laminated tempered glass

55.2 (10 mm) or 66.2 (12 mm)

Building balcony

Posts or base profile

88.2 (16 mm)

Public areas (ERP)

Laminated tempered SentryGlas

1010.4 (20 mm)

Frameless balustrade (no handrail)

Base profile + extra rigid glass

88.2 / 1010.4 depending on calculation

Large spans (+1.5 m)

Reinforced profile

1010.4 or 1212.4

Legal reminder

Monolithic tempered glass alone is strictly prohibited for balustrades.
It must be laminated so that, in case of breakage, fragments remain bonded together.

4. Load calculation formulas (Eurocode EN 1991)

Regulatory horizontal load

  • Residential:
    F = 0.6 kN/m
  • Public buildings, shopping centers, stadiums:
    F = 1 to 3 kN/m depending on category

Bending moment

M = (F × L²) / 8

Allowable deflection

Maximum glass deflection:
f_adm = L / 200

Allowable stress

  • Tempered glass: 120 MPa
  • Laminated glass: depends on PVB, typically 8 to 15 MPa
  • SentryGlas (ionoplast): 25 to 30 MPa

Recommended safety factor

  • Between ×2 and ×3 depending on public use
  • For public buildings: minimum factor of 3

5. Legal risks in case of incorrect design

A non-compliant balustrade can lead to:

Civil & ten-year liability

  • Civil liability in case of fall
  • Full replacement obligation
  • Possible loss of ten-year warranty if NF P01-012 / P01-013 are not met

Criminal liability

In case of serious accident (fatal fall):

  • Criminal charges (involuntary manslaughter)
  • Possible conviction of company director
  • Temporary administrative closure

Financial risks

  • Full replacement: €300 to €1500 per meter
  • Legal expertise and project delays

90% of disputes come from:

  • Non-laminated glass
  • Insufficient thickness
  • Undersized profiles

6. How to mitigate risks

Risks can be significantly reduced by following these simple rules:

  • Strictly comply with NF P01-012 / P01-013
  • Use only laminated tempered glass (PVB or SentryGlas)
  • Have calculations performed by an expert (glass calculation software)
  • Require test reports or DoP compliant with EN 14449
  • Always apply a minimum safety factor of ×2
  • Document installation (photos, technical files, as-built documentation)
